Do you know what the #1 reason why people are leaving the church? We can turn to the scriptures to find the answer. Mormon taught, “And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.” God’s children do not remember Jesus, they forget his goodness and blessings. Have you ever wondered why we have to hear the same things at church all the time? Topics such as prayer, repentance, keeping the Sabbath day holy, temple and church attendance, scripture study, tithing and so on? Mormon continues in verse 5, “how slow are they to remember the Lord their God, and to give ear unto his counsels, yea, how slow to walk in wisdom’s paths!” Even Jonah, who was a prophet, needed to remember. Jonah didn’t listen to God, but ran away from his calling to preach to the people of Nineveh and was eventually swallowed by a whale. When Jonah was in the belly of the whale he said, “When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee.” President Henry B. Eyring said, “forgetting God has been such a persistent problem among His children since the world began.” So what is the solution?
President Eyring continues, “There is a simple cure for the terrible malady of forgetting God, His blessings, and His messages to us. Jesus Christ promised it to His disciples when He was about to be crucified, resurrected, and then taken away from them to ascend in glory to His Father. They were concerned to know how they would be able to endure when He was no longer with them. Here is the promise. It was fulfilled for them then. It can be fulfilled for all of us now: “These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
The best way to bring the Holy Ghost into our life and into the hearts of our children is found in the vision of the tree of life. Lehi saw the iron rod along the straight and narrow path leading to the tree of life. Nephi taught us that the rod of iron “was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters.” We know the living waters to be Jesus Christ. As we cling to God’s word whether in holy scriptures or living prophets, we can overcome the worldly influence, see past the mist of darkness and the great and spacious building, to find our way to the tree of life, representing the love of God. Elder Neal A. Maxwell said, “The love of God for His children is most profoundly expressed in His gift of Jesus as our Redeemer. ‘God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.’ To partake of the love of God is to partake of Jesus’ Atonement and the emancipation and joys which it can bring.”
There is a reason the primary children sing the song, “Scripture Power.” There is power in God’s word that will help our children stay on the straight and narrow path leading to eternal life. One way we can receive scripture power was taught by Elder Richard G. Scott when he said, “Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high… Learning, pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world.”
The Come Follow Me program was designed to help families make the scriptures a central part of their lives. In 2023, MTC for Kids will be helping your children follow the council from Lehi, Mormon, and Elder Scott in using the scriptures to help us remember Jesus Christ so our children stay on the covenant path and grow their testimonies of Christ.
So, what does that look like? Each week, we will pick one scripture verse from the Come Follow Me lesson. With a laser focus on just one scripture, we will help your kids memorize and understand weekly doctrine to fill your kids with “pockets of light” to help quench the fiery darts of the adversary. We’ll help you build shields of faith through scripture power into the hearts of your children.
We call it High Five and Dive into the New Testament. Each week we will release a video hosted by my two kids Abbie who is 7 and Charlie who is 9. They will take you on a hunt for 3 clues to help them uncover the lesson for the week and I will help them as well. Think of it as primary at home. You can just push play and learn along with us or incorporate our High Five method of learning: Pray, Song, Video Lesson, Practice, and Ask. You can access more resources for each part by scanning the correct code in this printable that you can get at MTCforKids.com. Let’s go through each step really quickly.
- Pray. Start with Prayer. Invite the Holy Ghost to help your children understand and remember the teachings in the weekly video.
- Sing. Invite the spirit by singing a primary song. Weekly sing-along videos will be available for your family to use.
- Lesson. Saturday night each week, a new video will be released. Join our Scripture Club to really superpower your child’s learning of the New Testament. Decode the weekly message and add it to your own message in a bottle, serve and send a postcard with the scripture on it, a keychain for on the go learning, a 5×7 print of the scripture for the week and more fun ways to learn and memorize the scripture. You can purchase a digital version or get our Scripture card sent to your door every week! Save time on printing, ink, and get a reminder and activities right to your door. Kids love to get mail!
- Practice. Help your kids memorize the scripture verse for the week. Our Scripture Club will help you do that best! We also have a process you can use to review and retain the scriptures you are learning throughout the year available in a separate video.
- Ask. This is probably the most important step. After each video connect and ask questions to help them recognize the spirit and to answer any questions they might have. Don’t forget to bare your own testimony often to your children about the truths learned in the scriptures.
That’s how we high five and dive into the Scriptures. We have one more resource that will be a game changer at home, on-the-go, or in primary. Our Come Follow Me New Testament Boards. There are two versions, a small one to take to class or to use at home as well as a huge board to bring out each week.
And That’s it. Just as Jonah had a calling from the Lord, your children have been saved for these latter-days. Their mission and calling in life are important and will have eternal blessings for your entire family as you help them return to their Heavenly home. Go to MTCforKids.com to sign up for our Scripture Club and to get access to the list of scriptures we will be studying for the year. You can also watch our pilot episode that is available now so you can see a sample video of what to expect in 2023. We can’t wait to High Five and Dive into the New Testament in 2023.
