The Holy Ghost can help us choose the Right. Let’s take the letters from choose the right, CTR and use this scripture to come up with 3 ways the Holy Ghost helps us choose the right.

The first letter is the letter C.

Jesus said that the Holy Ghost is called a Comforter.

Just like Jesus has many names such as the lamb of God, the Begotten Son, the light of the world, the Savior and many more, the Holy Ghost goes by a few different names as well. He is called the spirit of God, Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit, the Still Small Voice, and also the Comforter. (point to word) Does anyone have one of these in your bedrooms?

Abbie: Well, I did until you took my blanket.

Melia: Yes, Abbie, don’t worry I will give it back. This is called a comforter. A comforter has three layers: this layer of fabric on top, the stuff in the middle, and a layer of fabric on the bottom.  A comforter helps us feel nice and warm at night. The Holy Ghost is like this comforter, he can give us a warm feeling inside to help us feel comforted and loved by God. We can get a warm feeling when we learn about something that is true. Let’s see if what Charlie found in the bag can help us understand how the Holy Ghost is a comforter.

Charlie, can you tell me if the stuffed animal is soft or hard?

Charlie: It’s soft.

Melia: Abbie, is it warm or cold?

Abbie: It feels kind of warm.

Melia: Is it small or big?

Charlie: It is small.

Melia: These are some of the same ways we feel the Holy Ghost as a comforter. The Holy Ghost can feel like a soft peaceful feeling. It can be a warm feeling inside and he usually speaks to us in a still, small voice to our mind and heart. Sometimes we have to really listen to hear him.

This peace, warmth, and voice also teaches us truth which takes us to the second way the Holy Ghost can help us. Let’s underline the next part of this scripture.

The second letter is a T.

The Holy Ghost is a teacher who will teach you all things.

Have you ever seen one of these?

Charlie: That’s Alexa.

Melia: Charlie, what does Alexa do?

Charlie: She plays music and I like to ask her questions about Pokemon and Japanese words.

Melia: Alexa is kind of like what the Holy Ghost can do for us. We can ask Heavenly Father in prayer and we can receive answers by the Holy Ghost, but unlike Alexa, the Holy Ghost knows all things. Remember when we talked about the Godhead.

The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead! We get to have a member of the Godhead helping us everyday. We can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost helping us choose the right like saying do this or don’t do that as we keep God’s commandments and follow Jesus. We can be taught by the Holy Ghost. For example, recently I was studying the scriptures and I read a scripture that the prophet Alma taught the people, he said, “to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in all things.” As I read these words the thought came “don’t pray without thinking, pray without ceasing.” You see my friends sometimes when I pray my mind wanders or I am not thinking about the words I am saying. I am not paying attention. Or I might say the same things over and over again without really feeling or thinking about what I am saying. Does that ever happen to you? As I read this scripture from Alma, that thought that said, “don’t pray without thinking, pray without ceasing” wasn’t my thoughts but from the Holy Ghost. I was being taught. I am working on trying to think and focus when I am talking to Heavenly Father. I just started a little prayer journal to help me do this. I think this idea came from the Holy Ghost too. I am grateful for the Holy Ghost that teaches me daily and helps me become a better person. He helps us know the truth like Moroni said, “And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”

The last way the Holy Ghost helps us to choose the right starts with the letter R.

In this scripture it says, he will “bring all things to your remembrance.” (underline)

The Holy Ghost is a Reminder.

The Holy Ghost helps us remember things we already know. He reminds us of things we have learned. For example, in the sacrament prayer we hear each week we eat the bread and drink the water in remembrance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We already made a covenant with God at baptism or you might be preparing to be baptized like Abbie. Each week we can repent and be clean again as we remember Jesus. The sacrament is a reminder of our covenants to take his name upon us, always remember him, and keep his commandments. Remembering God is so important. President Henry B. Eyring said, “…I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance—even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened.” He goes on to talk about finding ways to recognize and remember God’s kindness. He said, “It will build our testimonies… We come to see the hand of God more clearly, so clearly that in time we not only remember Him, but we come to love Him and, through the power of the Atonement, become more like Him.”

Here is an example of how the Holy Ghost can help us remember things forgotten: have you ever lost something? I have many times. Last week I was working on the video about the ten virgins. Did you get a chance to watch it? When I was planning the lesson, I wanted to show you this oil lamp but I couldn’t find it anywhere. After looking for a while, I decided to pray and ask God for help. After I finished praying, I immediately had a thought to go look in the garage again. I was directed to go right to a plastic bin that was in the corner of my garage and opened it, the oil lamp was right on the top. I said a prayer thanking Heavenly Father for helping me and then I was able to film the video for you.  Although I forgot where I put the lamp, the Holy Ghost knew where it was and he helped me find it. I have had this happen many times. Another way that the Holy Ghost can help us remember things was taught by Elder Glenn L. Pace when he said, “Sometimes the feeling [of a spiritual witness] is like a memory. We first learned the gospel in our heavenly home. We have come to this earth with a veil of forgetfulness. And yet lingering in each of our spirits are those dormant memories. The Holy Ghost can part the veil and bring those things out of their dormancy.” That means we learned things in heaven that the Holy Ghost can help us remember. One of the most important things the Holy Ghost has helped me to remember that I knew before I was born is that I am a child of God even as I saw these words, I feel that warm comforting feeling in my heart. Do you remember when my son Hyrum described what it felt like when he asked God if the Book of Mormon was true? Let’s watch that short part from our video called “Search the Scriptures.”

The Holy Ghost can help us remember who we are and the things we knew and learned even before we came to earth and the truth of what we learn here on earth. How does it feel when someone tells you that you are a child of God or that Jesus loves you? I know you hear it a lot from Charlie, Abbie and myself. If you listen to what you feel inside, the Holy Ghost will help you feel that yes, Charlie and Abbie are speaking the truth Jesus does love you. This is why they always say at the end “remember” Jesus loves you. You already chose Jesus before you came to earth, you already knew he loved you, now we need the Holy Ghost to help us “remember” to feel God’s love for you again. I hope you do and if you need help knowing for yourself if it is true, pray and ask God if he loves you. I know he will answer your prayers. He loves his children.

Now that we understand some of the roles of the Holy Ghost, let’s review how we receive the Holy Ghost. Charlie, do you remember how you got this gift?

Charlie: I received the Holy Ghost after I was baptized. My dad has the Melchizedek Priesthood and gave me the gift of the Holy ghost.

Melia: That’s right Charlie. My dad also confirmed me as a member of the church and I received the gift of the Holy ghost too. The next time you go to a baptism listen for the words “receive the Holy Ghost.” I love to feel the spirit confirm to me when someone receives this gift and remember we don’t “get” the holy ghost, we receive it that means we have to take it, we have to accept it. As we try to be like Jesus, keep his commandments, and listen to the Holy Ghost we are receiving one of the greatest blessings that Heavenly Father can give us.

Now let’s sing the primary song called the holy ghost.

Thanks for singing with us. I know the words of this song are true. I know God gave us the Holy Ghost to help be a Comforter, a Teacher, and a Reminder. When you add them together, the Holy Ghost helps us choose the right.

Melia: I know as you continue to pray, read your scriptures, go to church, choose the right, the Holy Ghost will guide you. He will help you stay on the covenant path so that you can return to live with God again. Now, let’s decode the message in a bottle.

Abbie: Okay, let’s get started. The clownfish is the letter n.

Charlie: The turtle is the letter L.

Abbie: The salmon is the letter E.

Charlie: The blue fish is the letter I.

Abbie: The marlin is the letter T.

Charlie: And the crab is the letter S.

Abbie: Let’s unscramble the words.

Charlie: I think it spells Listen.

Abbie: Yes, I can listen to the holy ghost to help me choose the right.

Melia: You my friends are amazing, I know God loves you. You can do it. I know you can choose the right as you listen to the Holy Ghost.
